JANUARY

January Craft of the Month: Cyclone Arm Warmers

Warm up your winter! With a few simple hand stitches you can turn a pair or red and gold striped socks into a

fun Cyclone accessory. Walk in during open hours January 13 - 31. $

Paint Your Own Pottery: Cardinal and Gold Night

Join us for a fun exploration of techniques in “painting” bisque. Pick your piece and illustrate your Cyclone Pride!

We will have samples for inspiration but your own ideas are always welcome too. Studio fee is $4 for ISU and

$5 for public to attend plus the cost of the bisque you select. Pottery will be fired within a week for you to pick

“Little Dresses for Africa” Work Weekend

Simple dresses made out of pillowcases provide relief and hope for the children of Africa. We will provide the

supplies, but can use the hands of volunteers to assist with making the dresses. From cutting fabric and ironing

to sewing, there is a place for anyone who has an hour or two to spare. Drop in to our community studio to

help another community of children in the orphanages of Central Africa. www.littledressesforafrica.org

Glass Beads

Learn the process of sculpting glass rods by heating and melting the glass in the flame of a gas-powered torch.

After practice, your lampworking skills will allow you to create pieces with detail and complexity that you can

use in jewelry or other decorative ways.

Resin Jewelry

Try out one of the most diverse mediums to create jewelry. Capture ideas, inspiration, and memories with

resin. We will have papers and fabric, but feel free to bring other items to class which could include thin or

small objects, photos or special papers. Discover ways to create color and texture, and leave class with 5

pendants and start your journey through the endless possibilities of resin!

Paint Your Own Pottery: Spiral String Painting

Middle Eastern Belly Dance

Lisa Rich McKelvey (Shiara) Come explore the music and movements of the Middle East with Shiara, an accomplished performer, choreographer and instructor, as your guide. Learn the basic movements used for any style of belly dance as well as a short dance routine that will help to solidify these concepts. Bring a scarf or shawl to tie around your hips and get ready to shake up your Wednesday night routine!

Belly Dance Challenge Lisa Rich McKelvey (Shiara)

A great way to increase your knowledge base while having fun and challenging yourself to be the best you can be. This class will include belly dance themed games, an obstacle course, trivia, drills and more! Each challenge is designed to train both your brain and your body, allowing you to sharpen your skills and deepen your understanding of this beautiful art form. Are you up for the challenge? Sewing: Infinity Scarf

February Craft of the Month: Hometown Love String Art

Hammer nails into a painted board in the shape of your state, pinpoint your hometown and add a string pattern. Lots of ways to personalize for someone special before Valentine’s Day or for any special occasion. Walk in during open hours February 1 - 28. $5 per state

Black History Month Button Making Reflect on the tradition, relevance, and importance of Black History Month for the past, present, and future during the month of February. Stop by The Workspace to make a button or magnet for just 50 cents. Designs feature inspirational quotes and images that celebrate achievements by black Americans and remember the central role of African Americans in US history.

Tai Chi

Learn the Yang Style Short Form as developed by Cheng Man Ching. The fun, easy-to-learn movements of The Form refresh the spirit and help improve balance, posture, flexibility, confidence, circulation, and overall health and well-being. Students will also learn a few Baqua and Chi Kung health exercises. Classes are appropriate for college students to seniors and everyone in between. Lloyd has been studying and practicing Yang Style Tai Chi for more than 20 years.

Swing Dance

Begin your exploration of metalsmithing by learning how to work with different types of metal, how to safely use tools, and techniques such as sawing, drilling, forming, chasing, annealing and riveting. Fine Silver (Metal Clay) Jewelry

Although metal clay looks and feels similar to clay, it becomes 99.9% silver after firing in a kiln. Stamp it, carve in it, sculpt it—the possibilities are endless! Learn to use this versatile and beautiful material to make a pendant or earrings.

Woodshop: Nesting Boxes

Make a 6, 5 & 4 inch set of nesting boxes. Part of the class will utilize hand tools to learn a traditional hand joinery technique. Then learn to use the machinery to make boxes efficiently. The Woodshop Orientation class is helpful, but not required for this class.

Oil Painting

Through this class, students will become comfortable using oil paint, and gain confidence in color mixing, composition, and paint application. It is meant for both beginners who have never painted before and more experienced painters who would like to try a new perspective and get a chance to paint with others. Sewing: Tablet Cover

A class for beginning sewers who can thread the machine and sew a little but need some direction to practice their skills. Make a cover for your iPad or Kindle that is fun and functional. Black History Month: Adinkra Painting Adinkra is a stamped cloth traditionally made by people in Ghana. The symbols in Adinkra each have a special meaning from unity and strength to faith and initiative in addition to representing proverbs. Tell your story by repeating or combining stamped symbols on fabric and leave with a personalized wall hanging.

Soap Making – Cold Process

Karla Moore

Make quality, handmade soap from scratch. Learn the step-by-step process - from the selection of oils and fragrances and calculating lye amounts to picking out equipment. Lye safety will be emphasized (there are no pre-made synthetic bases in this class!) A messy but fun process so wear old clothing with a long-sleeved shirt. Leave class with about 1.5 pounds of soap.

Intermediate Knitting: Chunky Cowl

Do you enjoy the fashion stylings of the dystopian future? Knit an amazing chunky cowl inspired by Katniss Everdeen in “Catching Fire.” Knitters will learn a variety of techniques including herringbone stitch, i-cord and garment construction. Knitters should be able to knit and purl and wield large needles. A supply list will be provided upon registration.

Photoshop

Sarah Carney Explore the basic tools of Photoshop. This class will be a slowly paced, step-by-step, follow-along class for the raw beginner. Get a handle on the basic functionality of this complicated program including: layers, cropping, filters, brushes, text and shapes.

Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop with Photoshop CS3 or higher. Otherwise, you are welcome to sit in and take notes.

This is sort of like blowing bubbles when you were a kid, but we do it with a straw and paint. The popped bubbles show up and make interesting patterns on the finished pieces. Decorate terra cotta flower pots with bright paint colors to spruce up your plants or flowers. Walk in during open hours March 1 – 13 or 24 - 31. $8 for one large or two small pots

Glass Beads: Decorative Finishes

Rhonda Scott

Add some pizzazz to your glass beads with surface decorations! Experiment with etching, pixie dust, and baking soda to produce a variety of looks including pearl finishes and beach glass looks. Other techniques will be covered if time allows. Students must complete a beginning glass beads class before taking this class. Supply fee includes glass for class time only. Propane/MAPP is available for purchase if needed. Free week includes use of tools but no supplies.

Screenprinting

Learn an inexpensive way to create custom t-shirts. Using your own design, learn to make a screen with the photographic emulsion method. Bring in your shirts and print away! This class is required in order to use our screenprinting equipment.

Wire Work for Jewelry

Terrie Hoefer Anyone can string beads, but making your own bead links, dangles, hoops, spirals, clasps, jump rings and ear wires will make you an expert wire worker. Bring about 50 of your favorite beads, natural stones, leftovers from past projects or pieces you created in the lampwork or fusion classes at The Workspace. Leave with finished jewelry and the know-how to create or repair your own jewelry.

Raku

Greg Lamont

Raku is a form of Japanese pottery dating back to the 16th century. Using low firing temperatures and removing pots from the kiln while still hot, a unique surface finish is created, often with crackled textures. Students will hand-build or throw simple objects which, after bisque firing, will be glazed and fired using the “Western” style technique which utilizes a post-firing reduction sequence. Wear long sleeves, cotton clothing and closed toed shoes to the firing.

Long shots and short shots: everyone wants to take a good photograph. Learn the basics of using your Digital SLR camera including settings, speeds, lighting and composition. Students will explore campus to use their new skills shooting photographs of their favorite sites and share those photographs to discuss technique, composition and design.

Acrylic Painting

Re-Upholstery

Fix up an old stool or simple chair and customize it for your space. Dan will work with students on how to deconstruct and then reconstruct your piece including choosing the correct fabric. Note this is a very basic class – no sofas, armchairs, etc.

Embroidery

Miniature Book Making

Using recycled papers and fabrics, we will play with traditional methods of bookbinding to create miniature handmade books. Typically smaller than 6 inches, these mini treasures can be used as pocket sketchbooks, tiny scrapbooks, haiku poetry journals, hidden diaries, or even tomes for gnomes. Leave class with the skllls to make larger books on your own.

Soap Making – Hot Process

Karla Moore

Learn soap making from scratch, using a hot-process crock pot method. With this method the “cure time” is greatly reduced. The ability to use finicky fragrances that normally can’t be used with a traditional Cold Process method is the trademark of this technique. Lye safety will be emphasized. A messy but fun process so wear old clothing with a long-sleeved shirt. Leave class with about 1.5 pounds of soap.

Zendoodle Workshop

Do you scribble patterns on notepads or junk mail? Does it relax you to doodle during class or in meetings? If so, you are already on your way to creating artful meditation. Whether you are new to this art form or you’ve been doing it for years, we will explore a few structured methods so you can begin creating beautiful patterns anytime, anywhere, to achieve relaxation and mindfulness, or as an entry point to a larger work of art.

April Craft of the Month: Felt Circles

Using inspiration from Kandinsky’s color studies, make a wall piece using circles of layered felt. Quick and easy hand stitching will give the felt dimension and texture before it is glued to a panel. Impress your friends with a 12” x 12” master study displayed in your space. Walk in during open hours April 1 - 30. $10 per 12” x 12” panel

Paint Your Own Pottery: Spring Cleaning

Help us clean out the (bisque) closet at our last Friday night PYOP for spring! 25 to 50% off select items. Studio fee is $4 for ISU and $5 for public to attend plus the cost of the bisque you select. Pottery will be fired within a week for you to pick up. Sculptural Glass Beads

Create mini-sculptures in glass! Learn techniques for shaping glass, making cane for hair, creating different kinds of eyes, and more. Students must take a beginning glass beads class before taking the sculptural class. Supply fee includes glass for class time only. Propane/MAPP is available for purchase if needed. Free week includes use of tools but no supplies.

Architectural Photography Field Trip

Go on a photo scavenger hunt to shoot images of basic architectural features on the beautiful buildings all over campus. No previous knowledge of architecture will be required as week one will include a short explanation of these features and students will receive their scavenger hunt lists. Week two will include time for additional hunting and time to share their finds and discuss successes and struggles with photographing buildings.

Argentine Tango Practica

This Milonga (dance party) is a multi-level class with lots of time to enjoy the music and dance. From 4 - 5pm moves for beginners are introduced with a different figure each week along with techniques for dancing better. From 5 - 7pm the dance floor is yours for dancing under the guidance of Valerie and working with different partners. An intermediate level figure will also be introduced during this time. Wear dancing shoes, smooth-soled shoes, or socks.

Classes meet every Sunday unless noted below. Purchase a dance punch card and attend as often as your schedule allows.

Sewing Lessons

Whether you are a beginner needing to learn how to operate a sewing machine, or someone who needs help finishing a project in progress, this class is for you. Set up time to work one-on-one with Judith and learn the skills and techniques you need to work on your own. Sewing machines are available or you may bring in your own machine. Call The Workspace to arrange your personalized class(es) in 3 hour increments.
