What a beautiful day (Monday) for 56 seniors to get out for our monthly potluck. Meat and potatoes were plentiful and desserts were a little scarce, so just watch and see, next month we will have lots of dessert. Monday we had an average crowd. The program speakers often ask me how many to expect and are quite surprised when I tell them somewhere between 45 and 70.
Liz Hertz, marketing director at Burke Corp., was our guest speaker who shared with us the history of Burke’s in Nevada. The company moved its small business from Ames to Nevada in 1984 and has expanded the plant many times since then. From two employees when it started in Ames in 1974, Burke Corp. now employees 300 people who work three shifts. In her power point presentation, she showed us the process of raw meat coming into the plant, being cooked in baking ovens, then flash frozen into crumbled meat for pizza toppings, meat balls and a variety of other uses. Their products are distributed to many companies all across the U.S. and Canada such as Casey’s, Pizza Ranch and Cosco. A big thank you to Liz for taking time out of her busy day to make this very interesting presentation.
The Center will be used by Ryerson’s/VanWall Company next Monday, Jan. 20, from 10-2, but will be available for regular activities after 2 p.m.
