C-N teachers ready for new school year

Colo-Nesco welcomed seven new teachers to the district August 13. Classes began for students Wednesday, August 20:

Beth Heller - 37

What will your role be at C-N this year? Seventh-12th science

What is your background/experience in education: I have Bachelor of Arts in biology from Luther College. This is my 15th year of teaching. Before this, I taught at Northeast Hamilton and South Hamilton.

What I’m looking forward to most this school year? Applying some new teaching methods I learned over the summer

What are your interests outside the classroom? I enjoy reading and listening to music.

Derek Reischauer - 44

What will your role be at C-N this year? Student teacher in the social sciences under Josh Nessa.

What prior teaching experience or education do you have in teaching? This is my first teaching job.

What are you looking forward to most at C-N this year? I’m excited to learn how to teach.

What are your interests outside the classroom? I enjoy golf.

Candace Sutton - 24

What will your role be at C-N this year? I’ll be teaching middle school and high school math. I’m also an assistant coach for the high school volleyball team.

What prior teaching experience or education do you have in teaching? I have a bachelor’s in math and secondary education endorsement from Coe College. This is my first teaching job.

What are you looking forward to most at C-N this year? I’m looking forward to using technology in the classroom and watching the kids get more comfortable with it.

What are your interests outside the classroom? I play a lot of recreational sports like volleyball and soccer.

Becca Johnson - 22

What will your role be at C-N this year? High school agricultural teacher and FFA advisor

What prior teaching experience or education do you have in teaching? I graduated from Iowa State University in May with a B.A. in education. I was a student teacher at South Hamilton last year.

What are you looking forward to most at C-N this year? I’m excited to get my feet wet and put my education to use.

What are your interests outside the classroom? I enjoy reading, and attending county and the state fair for agriculture-related events.

Erin Weber - 23

What will your role be at C-N this year? I’ll be teaching fifth- and sixth-grade special education.

What prior teaching experience or education do you have in teaching? I graduated from Simpson College with a degree in elementary education, with endorsements in special education, reading and early childhood. I was also a long-term substitute teacher in Ames.

What are you looking forward to most at C-N this year? I’m looking forward to having my own classroom, getting to know my students individually and helping them grow in their strengths.

What are your interests outside the classroom? I like listening to music, photography and hanging out with family and friends.

Elizabeth Anderson - 22

What will your role be at C-N this year? I will be teaching third grade.

What prior teaching experience or education do you have in teaching? I graduated from Iowa State with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education with a math endorsement. I also was a student teacher at Ankeny and was a substitute teacher for Ames.

What are you looking forward to most at C-N this year? I’m looking forward to teaching and working with students, as well as working with the other teachers in the district.

What are your interests outside the classroom? I enjoy spending time with my friends and family.

David Greenfield - 25

What will your role be at C-N this year? I will be teaching seventh-12th grade social studies and I’m an assistant football coach.

What prior teaching experience or education do you have in teaching? I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa last year and was a substitute here at Colo-Nesco last spring.

What are you looking forward to most at C-N this year? I’m looking forward to getting to know my students and building relationships with them.

What are your interests outside the classroom? In my free time, I enjoy working with the football team.

Hannah Bain - 23

What will your role be at C-N this year? I’ll be teaching fifth- and sixth-grade social studies and sixth-grade reading and language arts

What prior teaching experience or education do you have in teaching? I received my elementary education degree from Emporia State (Emporia, Kans.) and my reading endorsement from Iowa State.

What are you looking forward to most at C-N this year? I’m looking forward to getting to know my students and learning from some great teachers.

What are your interests outside the classroom? In my free time I like to read, cook and hang out with my family.
