The deadline to file papers to run for this year’s city elections was Sept. 19. Here’s a look at the races in Nevada and surrounding communities.
Three people have filed papers to run for the office of mayor in Nevada. Rhonda Le Appelgate, 615 10th St.; Lynn Lathrop, 1141 South I Ave.; and Andrew Murphy, 1068 H Ave., are vying for the position. Though none of these candidates is an incumbent, Murphy is a former Nevada mayor, having served in that capacity from XXXX to XXXX.
Andrew Kelly, 1322 Fourth St., who is presently serving as mayor to finish out the unexpired term of Jerry Gull who vacated the position earlier this year, is running unopposed to take back his council seat in Ward 2. Incumbent Brian Hanson, 1118 Fourth St., is running unopposed to take back his at-large seat on the city council.
A race is brewing for the Ward 4 council seat between incumbent Ray Schwichtenberg, 810 South 12th St.; and Matthew Hovar, 714 16th St.
Nevada voters will also consider Public Measure C in this year’s election. The public measure asks, “Shall the City of Nevada…be authorized to reduce the hotel and motel tax, pursuant to Chapter 423A of the Code of Iowa, to the rate of 5 percent?”
Zearing will have several contested races this year.
In the mayor’s race, incumbent Jim Chance Jr., 108 W Garfield St., will take on Gerald L. Murrell Sr., 207 Spruce St.
Seven candidates are running for three open seats on the Zearing City Council. Those seven include: Randall Dreckman, 201 N Center St.; incumbent Rick L. Good, 308 N Ash St.; Martin Herr, 211 E Main St.; Gerald L Murrell Jr., 308 N Elm St.; Orville Nordstrom, 312 W Main St.; Rodney Sargent, 107 Gogerty St.; and Dave Tisdale, 309 N Pine St.
