Colo-Nesco teacher and students headed to Chicago

The Colo-Nesco High School students that worked with their teacher on a McDonald’s diet biology semester project are now going to be treated to an experience of a lifetime.

Savannah Deupree, Grant Tiarks and Tanner Clatt will accompany their biology teacher, John Cisna, to Chicago for an all-expense paid trip by McDonald’s to the food franchise’s corporate offices.

The Nevada Journal previously featured these students and their teacher, after Cisna, with the help of these kids, accomplished dramatic weight loss by eating a diet of all McDonald’s foods for three months. The diet was so successful for the once overweight teacher that NBC’s “TODAY” show asked Cisna to do three more months on the eating plan and incorporate the help of a personal trainer, so that they could track what his overall health success is when he checks in with the morning show again this March.

“The second half of the experiment is going well, and I have learned much about the physiology of the body related to weight loss and health,” Cisna said. Following his all-McDonald’s eating plan and a personal trainer’s three-day a week program, which incorporates core strength, weight training and interval treadmill running, along with playing basketball twice a week, Cisna, as of Feb. 14, had lost 51 pounds. “My blood work continues to show I’m healthy and I have also now been tracking my electrolytes (potassium, sodium and chloride), making sure my salts are fine, which they are, and finally (so is) my blood pressure — which at last test was 121/78.”

McDonald’s received worldwide positive exposure in the news over the success of this biology project. It is for that reason, Cisna believes, that he received an email from Jeff Stratton, president of McDonald’s USA. Stratton invited Cisna and the three students that worked with him to the company’s corporate offices, offering to pay for all their trip expenses. Cisna and the students will go for two days, March 19 and 20. They will spend the first day at the corporate offices, meeting with McDonald’s marketing teams, nutritional teams and dietary teams to discuss how and what they did with their experiment. They will also be given a tour of the internal workings of McDonald’s at that level. On the second day, Cisna said he and the students will be treated to a tour of the city of Chicago, which he hopes will include a trip to the Museum of Science and Industry.

“This experience should give the kids an idea of what a big business is like … and what it takes to survive in the business world. I think it will be pretty overwhelming to see firsthand what goes on behind the scenes of a large corporation like McDonald’s,” Cisna said. “Not many students have this type of opportunity, and they should have lots to tell people when they return.”

In addition to the trip he is taking with students, Cisna has a few other trips related to this experiment and his success with a McDonald’s diet. On March 11 and 12, he will travel to Florida to speak to about 50 owners and operators of McDonald’s franchises. And right after that, he will travel back to New York for the “TODAY” show appearance, followed by appearances on Neil Cavuto’s show and “Fox & Friends.”

Cisna is also in the final stages of completing a book about the experiment and everything that has happened as a result of the project. He said the book will hopefully include some inspirational thoughts and stories to help others get more healthy. At the end of the book, he said, “we are putting the McDonald’s diet … for anyone who may be interested to see exactly how this was accomplished.” The book should be available through electronic stores by the first week of March.

As to what food Cisna is most looking forward to eating when he finishes the six months of eating strictly McDonald’s food offerings, his answer is seafood. “When I’m in New York, I will be finding a seafood place and having some scallops, shrimp and salmon with asparagus on a bed of rice pilaf, but in smaller portions than I have been used to in the past.”
