Nevada residents can now sink their teeth into local award-winning barbeque at Down Home Cookin’ and Bar-B-Que. The new restaurant at Lincoln Way serves both dine-in and carryout customers. Owners Ron and Dena Milhous are also hoping to find someone willing to deliver meals around Nevada by bicycle.
Down Home serves traditional barbequed meats like beef brisket, pulled pork, pulled chicken, pork loin and ribs. In addition the restaurant will offer items you normally won’t find in a barbeque setting, like pork tenderloins, loose meat sandwiches and nachos. The owners are also planning to offer daily specials on other items besides their barbeque and expand their menu later this year.
“We live and breathe barbeque,” said co-owner Dena Milhous. “We wanted to offer people in Nevada something they don’t have.” The Milhouses have lived in either Ames or Nevada since 1990.
The restaurant will be open from 11 a.m.–7 p.m., Monday through Thursday, during the spring and summer, with extended hours beginning in the fall. Dena and Ron will close the restaurant on the weekends in order to continue competing in and judging barbeque competitions around the Midwest, including for the Kansas City Barbeque Society. Deana plans to display any trophies the couple collects in the restaurant.
The atmosphere inside is consistent with a rustic look resembling a shed or barn, featuring wagon wheels suspended from the ceiling and cozy tables and booths inside. Picnic tables will also be set up so patrons can enjoy their meals outside in addition to the 32-capacity interior. A sand volleyball court is to be set up to add to the relaxed atmosphere of Down Home.
