Where are you from? I am from Egypt.

Why did you want to be an exchange student? I wanted to be an exchange student, because I wanted to see another countries and learn about their culture.

What sponsoring organization is your exchange experience through? IRIS

Did you want to come to the U.S. or did you consider other countries? I wanted to come to the u.s.

Did you want to come to Iowa or did you think about going to other states? I don’t choose the state or the city.

What do you think about Nevada? It’s a very nice city.

What do you like best about Nevada High School? A lot of things, like its teachers are very helpful and their ways of teaching and the activities after school.

Are you involved in any activities here? I am in large speech group, RSVP and I was going to join basketball.

What are the biggest differences here compared to where you are from? The biggest difference is that Nevada is much smaller than the city I came from and it’s not crowded and the school system is much different. We have eight periods and a recess time where I am from. And students stay in the same place all day, teachers move. In every class, students stand in line and salute the flag and sing the anthem before class. We don’t get to choose the subjects we study; every year we have the same subjects, they just get more advanced.

What things are similar here compared to where you are from? Almost nothing, but that is a good thing

What is the best thing you’ve had to eat in America? Buffalo Wild Wings and lasagna.

Who are the members of your family back home? mother, sister and father

Who are the members of your family here in Nevada? Tim and Phyllis Fevold and their sons.

What places in the United States do you hope to visit while you are here? The White House and Niagara Falls

When do you return to your home country? In June 2014

Will you pursue more education or a career when you return? More education for right now, and then an engineering program.

Name: Bertrand Joliet

Age: 15

Where are you from? South of France

Why did you want to be an exchange student? I would be an exchange student to discover a new culture in another country, a new population and a new kind of people.

What sponsoring organization is your exchange experience through? Rotary Club (District 1760 in France and 6000 in Iowa)

Did you want to come to the U.S. or did you consider other countries? I would go to a country where people speak English but particularly United States because for French people it’s a dream to leave in this country.

Did you want to come to Iowa, or did you think about going to other states? To be honest, before come here, I didn’t know that Iowa existed, I knew nothing about Iowa and I would (like almost everybody I guess) go in Florida, New York or California, but we can’t choose with Rotary Club.

What do you think of Nevada? I think it’s a small town where people are very nice and friendly.

What do you like best about Nevada, High School? The thing that I like the most is the people, everybody are very nice and friendly like I said in the question before.

Are you involved in any activities? I was in the play, it’s over today, I’m in the Rotary club with Juniors Rotarians and we do something during basketball game.

What are the biggest differences here compared to where you are from? Everything is different, I mean everything, but the biggest thing I saw is this country is very religious, a lot more than France. I can say too, cars are different, bigger and everyone has one.

What things are similar here compared to where are you from? I really see nothing similar, I tried to think about something but I don’t find…

What is the best thing you’ve had to eat in America? When I went to Chicago, my family and me went to a restaurant and we ate a very good (American) pizza, I think it was the best food!

Who are the members of your family back home? My mother Colette, my father Cyril, my sister Helene (21) and my brother Ianis (17)

Who are the members of your family here in Nevada? My first host family is the Zook family, my host mother Sherry, father Chris, and my two host brother Brandon (19) and Jace (15)

What place in United State do you hope to visit while you are here? United State is one of the biggest country in the world so I don’t know the all thing to do, but maybe visit New York and go in California, it’s the things we know the most in France.

When do you return to your home country? Between June and July

Will you pursue more education or a career when you return? One of the reasons I went in United State is to learn English because I would enter in an international School where some class are in English and I need to have a good grade in English to don’t fail the test to enter in the school. And maybe after work on advertisement or marketing where English is very important.

Is there anything else you’d like to add? Thanks the Rotary for everything they do and my host family (Zook’s family), I really like my trip here and I hope it will be better and better every day!
