ACTORS is opening its season, “The Winner Is,” with an American favorite. “Play It Again, Sam” was written by four-time Oscar award winner Woody Allen and was nominated for three Tony Awards during its 1969 run on Broadway. It opens at ACTORS on Sept. 20 and runs for two weekends.
Nevada residents Mike and Jana Deaton will direct the production.
“Play It Again, Sam” centers around the timid, intellectual and insecure movie critic Allan Felix (Ben Lievens, another Nevada resident) whose wife Nancy (Lacey Schroeder) packs up and leaves him because “all we ever do is see movies.” In true Woody Allen style, Allan is confused and devastated when Nancy leaves, and he imagines her in the arms of a lover (Cody Becker). The laughs start when he asks himself how can he start over and be successful with women?
Allan spends a great deal of time daydreaming. He is pleased when his favorite film hero from the 1940s, Humphrey Bogart (Ben Smith), appears in his apartment to discuss Allan’s dating technique. Allan’s friends, Dick and Linda Christie (Brandon Brockshus and Moria Borys) come to his rescue and fix him up with a bevy of lovely women (Emily Griffin, Sarah Gidlewski, Raven Wine, Mataya Huling and Emily Thurmaier). They provide hilarious fantasy and reality sequences as Allan attempts to utilize Bogey’s advice. However, sometimes Bogey’s dating advice isn’t as good as his reputation. “Dames are simple,” says Bogey. “I never met one who didn’t understand a slap in the mouth or a slug from a 45!”
Veteran directors Mike and Jana Deaton, comment, “Woody Allen is very challenging, but with the cast and crew we have assembled, we are pumped.”
Producers Lynn Lloyd, Lynn McElrath and Myra Jackson are very pleased and excited about the young and talented cast taking part in “Play It Again, Sam.” Mike and Myra Jackson will design and build the set.
“Play It Again, Sam” opens on Sept. 20 and will continue on Sept. 21, 27, 28 at 7:30 p.m. and one matinee on Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at Gallery 319-232-2354 or at the door the night of the show. However, be aware, many of last year’s shows sold out, so get your tickets early!
Season tickets are still available and can be purchased at Gallery 319 at the same time as “Play It Again, Sam” show tickets. A season ticket costs only $75, and saves $10 over the season. A season ticket is five coupons that can be exchanged for a ticket to any ACTORS performance. That way, season ticket holders aren’t restricted to any specific show or performance. It is a great way to save money.
