Nevada High School students, under the leadership of the student council, stepped up to support the local PTA’s “Snuggle Up to a Good Book” event held on Tuesday evening, Jan. 14.

The book collection was a Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service project, facilitated by AmeriCorps (Iowa Reading Corps) member, Barb Mittman. More than 300 books were collected to make sure that all children who attended would take home a book of their own. Leveraging the strength of NHS students to help put books in the hands of children advances King’s dream of opportunity for all.

“Snuggle Up to a Good Book” featured guest readers and a book swap. Pastor Dave Burling, police officer Matt Snyder, NHS students Cooper Dodd and Sophia Wilson, and Barb Mittman brought their favorite stories (and songs) to life for Central households. Nearly 200 children took home more than 1,300 books during the Book Swap.

Thank you to the Nevada PTA, NHS students and Central faculty for promoting this literacy event and leading through service to others.
