The Story County Board of Supervisors has awarded a bid for Phase Two of the Dakins Lake Expansion Project to Smith Seeding, Inc., of Eldridge.
Phase Two of the project will complete the construction of a new campground, picnic shelter, trails, boat ramp and more. Five bids were submitted. Following inquiries of qualifications, the Story County Board of Supervisors awarded the bid to Smith Seeding, Inc., at the Jan. 21 meeting. The estimated completion date is Oct. 1. Story County Conservation Director Michael Cox hopes to open Dakins Lake to the public in the spring of 2015.
Cox states, “We are excited to enter the final stage of the expansion project, because it will allow us to help meet the recreational needs of the community and bring more economic opportunities to the community, all the while protecting the water quality of the lake for years to come.”
Dakins Lake, located on the northeast edge of Zearing (12635 710th Ave.), was originally a 41-acre park and was expanded to a little over 100 acres last year as part of Phase One. The original lake had suffered significant siltation. For several years, the Story County Board of Supervisors and the Story County Conservation Board have been working to correct this problem, while also providing additional recreational opportunities for the community. Phase Two achieves this by including construction of a playground, boat ramp, shower/restroom facility, picnic shelter, dock, educational signage, campground and trails.
