Every summer Camp Hertko Hollow offers youth with diabetes, ages 6-18, two exciting one-week residential camping sessions held at the Des Moines Y Camp near Boone. Our 2014 Kids Week session for ages 6-12 is June 22-28. Teen Week for ages 13-18 is June 29-July 5. Mini-camps are offered during Kids Week for 6-7-year-olds. All campers enjoy the many activities Y Camp offers, while making new friendships with other campers just like them who have diabetes. Professional health care supervision of all diabetes-related tasks is provided at all times to the campers, offering a very safe and enjoyable camping program and experience. Many young campers learn how to give their first insulin injection while at camp!
Camp Hertko Hollow’s mission is to provide an educational and recreational camping program for Iowa’s youth between the ages of 6-18 who have diabetes - to promote diabetes management skills to gain independence and a positive attitude for controlling the disease.
