Youth & Shelter Services, Inc., Iowa KidsNet, Variety-The Children’s Charity, AMP-Achieving Maximum Potential and The National Center for Adoption have joined efforts to raise awareness about adoption by organizing the first annual Gingerbread Run/Walk for Adoption. The 5K run/walk will be held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 3, at Ada Hayden Park, 5205 Grand Ave., in Ames.
Adoption promotion is important because in the U.S., approximately 2.4 million people are adopted and 101,719 children are waiting to be adopted from foster care. Moreover, millions of individuals are interested in adopting infants, but only 12,000 infant adoptions occur each year.
The goal of this walk/run is to celebrate adoptive parents, birth parents who make an adoption plan and individuals who are adopted/waiting to be adopted. In Iowa, approximately 880 youth are legally eligible for adoption from foster care, and more foster parents are needed.
Register online at www.racesonline.com, keyword: adoption. All participants who have registered and paid for a T-shirt will receive a bag containing a T-shirt, promotional items and three ticket stubs for their choice of snacks including water, coffee, hot chocolate, bananas, bagels or gingerbread cookies following the race.
These age categories, 14 and Under, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60+, will be awarded first place medals for runners, male and female.
Registration is due Oct. 15 to ensure an accurate T-shirt size. Participants can register online or by mail. Mail in registrations can be sent to the Family Life Center at 125 S. 3rd St. Ames, IA 50010.
