Loren Arthur Barker, 77, of Nevada, died on Tuesday June 18, 2013 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. No formal services will be held in keeping with Loren’s wishes. Burial will take place in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery at a later date.
Loren was born on August 18, 1935, to L.B “Pat” and Sylvia (Hemstock) Barker in rural Nevada. He was a graduate of Shipley High School and was enlisted in the Air Force Reserves. On December 30, 1960, he was united in marriage to Joann L. Cox in Bethany MO. Loren was employed by Wright Tree Service, and was also involved in farming and woodworking. He was a craftsman at heart, and assisted in the restoration of the Historic Carousel in Story City. Loren enjoyed traveling across the country and was an avid fisherman and hunter.
Loren is survived by four sons, Tom (Jennifer) Barker and Jay Barker all of Story City, Doug (Andrea) Barker of Waverly, and Bob (Dana) Barker of Nevada; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; one brother Larry (Alma) Barker of Nevada; and two sisters, Jeannette (Glen) Borders of West Des Moines and Martha (Bob) Collins of Colo; and one sister-in-law, Elaine Barker of Nevada.
Loren was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joann on August 22, 2007, a sister, Lois Thornton, and two brothers, Howard Barker on September 23, 1991 2007, and Kenneth Barker, on August 22, 2001.
