I am honored and humbled to be kicking off the new school year as superintendent of the Nevada Community School District. It is my goal to bring a growth mindset, a dedication to servant leadership and a determined effort to this tremendous community and school system. While I continue to gain perspective on past and current practices, successes and challenges, it is clear that Nevada Schools has enjoyed a supportive and prideful community base. It is further evident that our district is comprised of caring and dedicated employees, committed to the well- being of children.
During my assessment of the district, both prior to my hire and since, I found myself noting all that is good about Nevada Schools: student achievement, programming, staff longevity, climate, facilities, technology, etc. etc. etc. The hard work and commitment of those who have built, and continue to build, the reputation of Nevada Schools is to be commended.
At the same time, I am reminded of the words of Jim Collins in “Good To Great” (2001): Good is the enemy of great. And that is one of the key reasons why we have so little that becomes great. We don’t have great schools, principally because we have good schools. We don’t have great government, principally because we have good government. Few people attain great lives, in large part because it is just so easy to settle for a good life.”
Thus, our challenge is before us - to seek continual improvement for the children of Nevada in all that we do; to continually seek the leap from good, or even very good, to GREAT; to unlock the unlimited potential that Nevada has to offer. I welcome this challenge and look forward to our journey together. Collectively, I believe we can take student opportunity and achievement to new heights, model character (Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship) for our students and provide them the opportunity to demonstrate and enhance the leadership capacity among our staff and students.
I am thankful for the warm welcomes and greetings by so many and look forward to meeting the rest of you in the coming days, weeks and months. Please do not hesitate to contact me with your questions, concerns, or comments. I can be reached via phone at: 515-382-2783, or via email at: firstname.lastname@example.org .
