C-N baseball team defeats Tripoli

MADRID – The Colo-Nesco baseball team went 0-2 at the Madrid Invitational Saturday as the Royals came up short against Madrid and Woodward Academy.

Colo-Nesco suffered a tight 6-5 loss to Madrid and they struggled against Woodward Academy in a 13-2 setback in five innings. The two defeats put Colo-Nesco at 3-8 on the season.

In the loss to Madrid, the Royals scored a run in the third inning and two in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead into the sixth inning. In the sixth Colo-Nesco plated two more runs, but Madrid put three on the board to knot the score at 5-5.

Colo-Nesco was held scoreless in the top of the seventh and Madrid came up with a run in the bottom of the inning to win the game.

The Royals ended up with four hits on offense. Taylor Hill tripled, scored twice and drove in one run to lead the way individually.

Christian Reischauer doubled, walked, stole a base and tallied one run and RBI apiece. Matthew Hill went 1-for-4 with a steal and an RBI and Brady Stoeffler was 1-for-2 with two walks and a steal.

Steven Cutler and Evan Webb both scored one run for the Royals.

Stoeffler was the losing pitcher. He went the distance, allowing three earned runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and five walks in 6 1/3 innings.

Brad McCormick was the winning pitcher for Madrid as he allowed three earned runs with eight strikeouts in seven innings. Josh Henriksen went 3-for-4 with a double, steal, run and two RBI; Wyatt Smith was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs and Mason Gibson doubled and picked up two steals, a pair of walks and an RBI for the Tigers.

In the loss to Woodward Academy the Royals scored one run in both the first and fourth innings. Woodward Academy picked up two runs in the first, five in the third and three apiece in the fourth and fifth frames.

Matthew Hill went 2-for-2 with a run, Reischauer was 1-for-3 with a steal and a run and Tanner Clatt singled and drove in a run for the Royals.

ZEARING – Colo-Nesco couldn’t shake one bad inning in a 5-4 home loss to CAL June 12 in Zearing.

The Royals gave up four runs in the top of the fourth inning to squander an early 2-0 lead. They fought back to tie the score with a run in the bottom of the fourth and another in the sixth, but CAL came back with a run in the seventh and Colo-Nesco was unable to answer, falling to 2-3 in the Iowa Star Conference.

Christian Reischauer took the loss despite a solid effort on the mound for the Royals. He only allowed one earned run on four hits with eight strikeouts and two walks, going the full seven innings.

Colo-Nesco had five hits on offense. Reischauer went 2-for-4 with two steals and a run and Grant Tiarks doubled, stole a base and scored twice to lead the way for the Royals at the plate.

Taylor Hill went 1-for-3 with one steal, run and RBI apiece, Matthew Hill walked, stole a base and drove in a run and Tanner Clatt picked up a single for Colo-Nesco.

Austin Guerrero doubled and drove in a run, Juan Calles went 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI and Caleb Striegel ended up 1-for-3 with one run and RBI apiece for CAL. Guerrero was the winning pitcher as he struck out five and walked one, allowing only two earned runs over seven innings.

TRIPOLI – Colo-Nesco used a strong hitting attack to get by Tripoli, 9-6, June 11 at Tripoli.

The Royals pounded out 16 hits for the game. They scored a run in five different innings to hold off the Panthers for their second Iowa Star Conference victory.

After two scoreless innings, the Royals plated two runs in the third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth to build a 6-3 lead heading into the sixth. After Colo-Nesco scored a run in the top of the sixth, Tripoli pulled within 7-6 with a three-run outburst in the bottom of the inning.

Colo-Nesco responded with two runs in the top of the seventh to cushion its lead and relief pitcher Christian Reischauer blanked the Panthers in the bottom of the inning to sew up the victory.

Brady Stoeffler earned the win after allowing four earned runs on five hits with six walks and two strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. Reischauer threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings without giving up a hit and he struck out three and walked one to pick up the save.

Grant Tiarks was 3-for-5 with three runs, two steals and two RBI and Stoeffler went 3-for-4 with a walk, run and three RBI to pace the explosive Royal hitting attack.

Taylor Hill went 2-for-5 Matthew Hill and Payton Larson each finished 2-for-5. Taylor Hill ended up with a double and a run, Matthew drove in two runs and Larson added one run and RBI apiece.

Reischauer, Steven Cutler, Tanner Clatt and Mark Frohwein each had one hit for the Royals. Reischauer also stole a base and scored, Cutler had one walk, steal and run apiece, Clatt walked twice and scored once and Frohwein drove in one run.

Tylor Seehase took the loss for Tripoli after giving up five earned runs with four walks and two strikeouts in seven innings. Seehase also homered and scored two runs on offense and Zach Johnson doubled and scored for the Panthers.

DAYTON – Not much went Colo-Nesco’s way June 10 in Dayton as the Royals were handed a 13-0 loss by Southeast Iowa in five innings.

Colo-Nesco only gave up five hits, but control problems on the mound hurt the Royals as they issued 11 walks. Southeast Iowa scored seven runs in the second inning and five in the third to put the game away early.

Christian Reischauer, Taylor Hill, Grant Tiarks and Matthew Hill each singled once for the only Royal hits. Steven Cutler drew two walks and Tanner Clatt picked up one free pass for the Royals.

ZEARING – A lack of production at the plate hurt Colo-Nesco in a 7-1 Iowa Star Conference loss to GMG June 9 in Zearing.

The Royals were unable to keep pace with the Wolverines after recording only two hits all game. GMG finished with 10 hits on the night.

GMG scored a run in each of the first three innings and two more in the top of the fourth. Colo-Nesco put up its only run in the bottom of the fourth, and the Royals went scoreless over the final two innings to allow the Wolverines to pull away.

Taylor Hill hit a double and Tanner Clatt singled once in three at-bats for the lone Colo-Nesco hits. Mark Frohwein, Christian Reischauer and Steven Cutler each drew a walk and Reischauer also stole a base.

Brady Stoeffler scored the only Colo-Nesco run. Reischauer was the losing pitcher after giving up five earned runs with nine strikeouts and six walks going the full seven innings.

Josh Raymond earned the win for GMG, striking out nine and walking three in seven innings. Chad Plaehn was the top Wolverine hitter as he doubled, homered and drove in two runs.
