C-N falls to No. 4 AGWSR in regional semifinals

ACKLEY - The Colo-Nesco softball team saw its season come to a close with an 11-0 loss to No. 4 AGWSR in the Class 1A regional semifinals Friday in Ackley.

The Royals hung tough for two innings against a powerful Cougar squad, but everything quickly went south in the third inning.

Colo-Nesco gave up eight runs in the third to fall behind 9-0. AGSWR tacked on two more runs in the fourth and Colo-Nesco was unable to get on the board in the fifth as the game ended due to the 10-run rule.

Colo-Nesco had two hits in the loss. Both hits went for extra bases as Sam Riese and Kylie Sarver both smacked a double and Sarver also stole a base.

Mackenna Ruffcorn took the loss for the Royals. She gave up 10 earned runs on 13 hits with six walks and four strikeouts in five innings.

Colo-Nesco ended the season at 9-15.

Ashley Sicard was the winning pitcher for AGWSR as she struckout seven and walked none in five innings. Olivia Ingledue went 3-for-4 with a triple, two steals, three runs and four RBI to pace the Cougars on offense.

MCCALLSBURG - Colo-Nesco easily shook off a slow start to dispose of Grandview Park Baptist by a 7-3 score in Class 1A regional quarterfinal play July 9 at McCallsburg.

The Royals fell behind 3-0 after one inning. But they came back to tie the score with three runs in the second inning.

Colo-Nesco went in front with a run in the third. The Royals maintained a 4-3 lead until the bottom of the fifth, when they plated three big insurance runs.

Royal pitcher Mackenna Ruffcorn blanked the Defenders over the last two innings to wrap up her team’s ninth victory of the season.

Ruffcorn gave up two earned runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and four walks in seven innings to earn the victory. She also led Colo-Nesco on offense by going 2-for-3 with a run and three RBI.

Madison Farren ended up 2-for-3 with a run and a steal. Peyton Hall doubled and drove in two runs and Sam Riese doubled and tallied one run and RBI apiece.

Shayla Dean finished 1-for-3 with a run and two steals; Hannah Buseman was 1-for-3 with a run, RBI and steal and Chelsea Henze also picked up a base hit for Colo-Nesco.

MCCALLSBURG – Colo-Nesco used a fifth-inning surge to get past Southeast Webster-Grand, 6-4, in its Class 1A regional opener July 7 in McCallsburg.

The Royals had a rough go to start the game as they surrendered all four Eagle runs in the top of the first. Colo-Nesco put up one run in the bottom of the first and added another run in the third to get back in the game.

The score remained 4-2 in favor of Southeast Webster-Grand until the bottom of the fifth.

Then the Royals manufactured a four-run inning of their own to go up by two runs.

Pitcher Mackenna Ruffcorn blanked the Eagles over the final two innings to secure the victory as Colo-Nesco improved to 8-14 on the season.

Ruffcorn gave up four earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts and five walks in seven innings to get the win. She was supported by a Royal offense that totaled 10 hits and helped itself out on the base paths with five steals.

Sam Riese hit a two-run home run, Kylie Sarver doubled and scored; Shayla Dean went 2-for-4 with three steals, two runs and an RBI and Madison Farren was 2-for-3 with a walk, steal, run and RBI to lead Colo-Nesco at the plate. Ruffcorn was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run,

Hannah Buseman finished 1-for-3 with a steal, and Chelsea Henze and Kassie Robinson each picked up one hit for Colo-Nesco.

Jossie Ferrari went 3-for-4 with a triple, steal and run to pace Southeast Webster-Grand on offense. Emma Clausen was the losing Eagle pitcher after giving up three earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and one walk in six innings.

TRAER – Colo-Nesco was doomed from the start against North Tama July 3 as the Royals gave up nine runs in the first inning of a 12-2 loss to the Redhawks in Traer.

The poor first inning left Colo-Nesco in too deep a hole to climb out of as they finished 6-5 in the Iowa Star Conference.

The Royals ended up with just two hits on offense. Sam Riese hit a solo home run and Kassie Robinson doubled in the other Colo-Nesco run.

Mackenna Ruffcorn also walked and scored and Hannah Buseman drew one free pass for the Royals.

Ruffcorn was the losing pitcher after giving up nine runs – five earned on five hits with one walk and no strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings. Riese allowed three earned runs on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.

Jessie Jacobs went 3-for-4 with three steals and one run; Anna Kvidera was 2-for-3 with a double, steal, two runs and an RBI; Madison Howard went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Carlie Feisel doubled and drove in two runs for North Tama. mound.

GARWIN – Colo-Nesco scored early and often in a 13-0 drubbing of GMG in three innings July 1 at Garwin.

The Royals plated seven runs in the first inning and six in the second. They coasted over the third inning as the game was called due to the 12-run put in place after three innings.

Colo-Nesco totaled 15 hits on offense. Kylie Sarver was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs, two RBI, a walk and two steals; Madison Farren went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI and Mackenna Ruffcorn was 2-for-3 with a triple, run and two RBI to lead the Royals. Chelsea Henze finished 2-for-2 with a run and RBI apiece and Hannah Buseman went 1-for-3 with a run and three RBI. Shayla Dean went 1-for-4 with one walk, run and RBI apiece,

Peyton Hall finished 1-for-2 with a run, RBI and walk, Sam Riese was 1-for-1 with an RBI and a walk and Kassie Robinson finished 1-for-3 with two runs, a steal and an RBI.

Ruffcorn gave up just one hit and she struck out one with no walks in three innings to get the victory.

Peyton Mannan doubled for GMG’s only hit. Abbie Duden took the loss for the Wolverines as she allowed 13 runs with two strikeouts and five walks in two innings.
