MURRAY – The Colo-Nesco football team made a game effort against defending 8-man District 6 champion Murray Friday, but the Royals didn’t have the horses to run with an explosive Mustang squad in a 51-18 loss at Murray.
Colo-Nesco forced three punts and made one goal-line stand defensively. Royal quarterback Taylor Hill also came up with some big plays on offense.
But Murray’s Andrew Rider gashed the Colo-Nesco defense for 169 yards and four touchdowns and the Mustangs ended up with 313 total rushing yards as they were able to maintain control throughout the contest.
Murray led 30-6 at the half.
In the first half, Rider had touchdown runs of 4, 40 and 12 yards; Sam Rockhold broke free for a 40-yard scoring scamper of his own and Brandon Short kicked a 21-yard field goal for the Mustangs. Hill came through with Colo-Nesco’s lone touchdown of the half when he outran the Mustang defense on a 57-yard jaunt to the end zone midway through the first quarter.
Scoring runs of 29 yards by Rider and 26 from Seth Nerness enabled Murray to increase its lead to 44-6 through three quarters. Colo-Nesco outplayed Murray in the fourth quarter, even though the Mustangs still had their first-string defense in the game.
The Royals put two touchdowns on the board in the final 12 minutes. Both came via Hill’s arm as he threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Blake Stevens midway through the period and added an 18-yard scoring toss to Zach Jamison with 3:11 left in regulation.
“I am really proud of the effort our team put forth against a very tough Murray squad,” Colo-Nesco head coach Josh Nessa said. “Our tackling improved, which was a coaching point we worked on this week. Offensively, we had the best passing game we have had all season and our offensive line had the best night of blocking they’ve had all season. Great effort, great heart and we left it all on the field.”
Hill ran 22 times for 79 yards and he completed 4 of 10 passes for 56 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Stevens picked up 57 yards rushing on nine carries in addition to his touchdown reception, Clayton Bryan had 15 yards rushing and receiving apiece and Evan Webb caught two passes for 26 yards.
As a team, Colo-Nesco totaled 223 yards and had just one turnover.
Murray finished with 377 yards.
Nerness complemented Rider with 82 yards and two touchdowns rushing on 10 carries and Rockhold caught three passes for 26 yards to go along with his 40-yard scoring run. Matthew Barnes had three catches for 38 yards and 18 yards rushing and Thane Simmons completed 6 of 11 passes for 64 yards for the Mustangs, who improved to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in 8-man District 6.
Webb led Colo-Nesco defensively with 11 tackles. Michael Starling made eight tackles and one tackle for loss, Grant Tiarks tallied six tackles and two stops behind the line, Bryan and Casy Angell both made five stops and Garret Tiarks recovered a fumble.
The loss put Colo-Nesco at 2-6 overall and 2-4 in the district. The Royals will wrap up the season this week with a home game against Grandview Park Baptist (2-5, 2-3).
The game against the Defenders will start at 7 p.m. in Colo.
