C-N softball team loses to WM in nine innings

Royals open season with tough 7-6 loss

STATE CENTER – The Colo-Nesco softball team was dealt a dramatic loss by West Marshall in its season opener May 23 as the Royals fell to the Trojans, 7-6, in nine innings.

Colo-Nesco led 4-3 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. But West Marshall came through with a clutch run in the inning to tie the score and force extra innings.

Both teams scored one run in the eighth inning and Colo-Nesco added another score in the ninth. But West Marshall was able to put two runs on the board in the bottom of the ninth to emerge victorious.

Shayla Dean and Sam Riese were both 2-for-4 for the Royals in the loss. Dean produced one run and RBI apiece, and Riese doubled and drove in a run.

Melanie Van Loon singled, walked, stole a base, scored one run and drove in two. Erica Babinat doubled in a run; Hannah Buseman finished with one hit, run, walk, RBI and steal apiece; Michelle Babinat scored twice; and Madison Farren added a single for the Royals.

Erica Babinat took the loss as she threw all nine innings and allowed five earned runs on 11 hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Kallie Malloy and McKenna Hotopp led West Marshall offensively. Malloy was 3-for-5 with two runs and RBI apiece and Hotopp finished 2-for-5 with two doubles and three runs.

Rachel Freland was the winning Trojan pitcher as she went the distance and allowed four earned runs and three walks with 10 strikeouts.
