Royals lose to Tigerhawks in eight innings

COLFAX – A gutsy performance fell painfully short for the Colo-Nesco softball team against Colfax-Mingo June 27 as the Royals were handed a 4-3 loss in eight innings at Colfax.

Colo-Nesco took a 2-0 lead after scoring one run in the first inning and another in the fourth. Colfax-Mingo came through with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Colo-Nesco answered with a run in the top of the sixth to even the score.

The score remained tied through seven innings to force an extra frame. In the eighth inning, Colo-Nesco failed to push a run across in its half of the inning and Colfax-Mingo took advantage by scoring the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the frame.

Erica Babinat pitched a solid game in defeat for the Royals. She threw all 7 2/3 innings, gave up seven hits and nine walks with one strikeout and allowed four earned runs.

Babinat also doubled and drove in a run at the plate. Madison Farren singled, stole a base and scored twice; Kylie Sarver singled, walked, stole a base and scored; McKenna Farren singled in a run and Kassie Robinson also came through with a single for the Royals.

Sydnie Fahrney went 3-for-4 with a run, two steals and two RBI and Jade Lewis singled, stole two bases and drove in a run for Colfax-Mingo. Tigerhawk catcher Alivia Haley walked five times and scored once and Amy Russell was the winning pitcher after giving up two earned runs with eight strikeouts and two walks in eight innings.

The loss put Colo-Nesco at 5-15 on the season.

DUNKERTON – Colo-Nesco used a late offensive spark to get past Dunkerton by a 7-4 score in Iowa Star Conference play June 26 in Dunkerton.

The Royals trailed 2-1 going into the sixth inning. Then their bats awoke as they plated four runs in the sixth inning and two in the seventh to pull away and improve to 4-6 in the ISC.

Sam Riese hit a two-run home run and finished 2-for-4 with two runs, Erica Babinat doubled in two runs and Madison Farren was 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI to lead the Royals’ 13- hit attack on offense.

Hannah Buseman finished 2-for-4 with two runs and a steal, Kylie Sarver singled, walked and scored and Michelle Babinat singled in a run. Grace Stalzer scored once and McKenna Farren, Peyton Hall and Kassie Robinson each had one hit.

Erica Babinat was the winning pitcher as she allowed one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks in seven innings.

Aubrey Duncan took the loss for Dunkerton after giving up three earned runs and picking up two strikeouts and walks apiece in seven innings. Dani Reicherts walked, scored once and drove in two runs, McKenna Boeschen doubled and scored and Shauna Mills singled and scored twice for the Raiders on offense.
