Cub boys get two HOIC victories

BONDURANT – The Nevada boys’ basketball team was unable to slow down Bondurant-Farrar in the first half Saturday at Bondurant and it resulted in a deficit too big to overcome as the Cubs suffered a 76-51 non-conference setback.

Nevada gave up 28 points in the first quarter, and by halftime, Bondurant-Farrar had built a commanding 46-24 lead. The Cubs played much better in the second half, but they couldn’t shave any points off the Bluejay lead, falling to 4-11 on the season.

Bondurant-Farrar shot well in all phases against the Cubs. The Bluejays hit 54 percent of their shots from the field, made 7 of 16 3-pointers and canned 15 of 18 free throws.

Nevada did alright from 3-point range (6 of 18) and at the foul line (11 of 18). But the Cubs struggled overall from the field, shooting just 29 percent from the field.

Bondurant-Farrar also outrebounded Nevada by a 33-23 margin.

Cole Gidel finished with 14 points, four rebounds, two steals and one assist for Nevada. Zach Hansen tacked on 11 points, three rebounds and one assist; Alex Merfeld contributed 10 points, four rebounds and one block; Jake Barker added six points, two assists and one block and Riley Huhn dished out four assists for the Cubs.

Drake Fuller had 26 points, six rebounds and six assists to lead Bondurant-Farrar. Sam Duffy added 11 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks, assists and steals apiece.

JEFFERSON – A great defensive stretch in the fourth quarter allowed Nevada to knock off Greene County, 58-50, Friday for a Heart of Iowa Conference road win at Jefferson.

Nevada led 30-26 at the half, but Greene County moved in front by two points heading into the fourth quarter. In the final period the Cubs held the Rams to just three points to take charge and improve to 4-10 in the HOIC with their second win in a row.

The Cubs used a big advantage at the foul line to emerge victorious. They went 23 of 30 from the line, compared to Greene County’s 9 of 18 showing.

Nevada also held a slim 27-25 rebounding advantage. The Cubs shot 41 percent from the field and made 3 of 9 3-pointers and the Rams made 43 percent of their field goals, including 7 of 25 3-pointers.

Zach Hansen had 13 points, five steals and two assists off the bench to pace a balanced Cub attack. Patrick Stephenson netted 11 points on 4 of 5 shooting from the field, A.J. Strottman came off the bench to contribute 10 points and Alex Merfeld came through with nine points, seven rebounds, two assists and one block for Nevada.

Trey Tucker did most of the damage for Greene County as he put up 24 points and added three assists and two steals. Landon Braun and Riah Nelson chipped in nine points apiece for the Rams.

SAYDEL – Nevada started strong against Saydel and maintained its edge all game Jan. 28 at Saydel as the Cubs pulled off a 55-45 road victory.

The Cubs jumped out to a 15-7 lead after one quarter. They led 22-15 at the half and increased that advantage to nine points by the end of three quarters.

In the fourth quarter both teams picked it up offensively. Nevada did just enough to maintain a comfortable lead and close the deal.

A 38-23 rebounding advantage by the undersized Cubs was a big key to the victory. Nevada also outshot Saydel from the field, 45 percent to 34 percent.

Alex Merfeld and Cole Gidel provided a great inside-outside punch for Nevada against Saydel.

Merfeld posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. He also had two assists, two steals and one block.

Gidel put up a team-high 19 points. He made two 3-pointers and 9 of 11 free throws, and added six rebounds, five assists and one steal.

Riley Huhn finished with nine points, three assists and three steals and Patrick Stephenson delivered seven points and six rebounds. T.J. Fey added three points and nine rebounds for the Cubs.

Alex Gustafson scored a game-high 20 points for Saydel. Mattingly Stone added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Eagles.
