Cub girls ground Eagles, 64-39

NEVADA – A second-half offensive surge carried the Nevada girls’ basketball team to a 64-39 Heart of Iowa Conference victory over Saydel Dec. 17 at the Nevada High School Field House.

The Cubs struggled over the first two quarter to get much going offensively as they only led 20-19 at the break. But they busted out of their offensive slump in a big way after halftime, scoring 22 points each quarter to turn the game into a rout.

Nevada shot 44 percent from the field and held Saydel to 30 percent shooting. The Cubs made 7 of 19 3-pointers and 9 of 13 free throws, and they posted a 32-27 rebounding advantage.

Balance and unselfishness keyed Nevada’s offensive success in the second half. The Cubs had four different players score eight or more points, and an impressive five players recorded at least three assists as Nevada totaled 21 dimes on 24 field goals.

Megan Pringnitz led Nevada with 16 points and five assists. Jessica Helton added 13 points, four assists and three steals and Claire Ausman hit three 3-pointers and netted 11 points.

Kati Cassabaum scored eight points inside and she also delivered eight rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Emma Lodestein picked up six points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocks; Alli Fey had three points, four assists and three rebounds and Abby Stephenson chipped in three points, assists and rebounds apiece.

Every player that got into the game scored for Nevada. Christine Ausman totaled two points and a pair of blocks and Amaris Hornbuckle also netted two points.

Gabbie Richards and Cassie Chubb both scored 10 points and Jordan Johnson netted eight for Sadyel. Brooklyn Allgood tacked on five points, rebounds and assists apiece, plus three steals for the Eagles.
