Cubs’ Harrelson places at Mendenhall Invite

AMES – The Nevada wrestling team had one wrestler place at the Mendenhall Invitational Saturday in Ames.

The Cubs’ Kody Harrelson took eighth at 160 pounds. As a team, Nevada was last out of 20 teams – most of them larger schools – with 11 points.

Harrelson went 2-3 on the day.

Harrelson defeated Humboldt’s Gus Arnold by a 10-5 decision in his first match, then lost by technical fall to Waverly-Shell Rock’s Spencer Derifield. In the consolation round Harrelson dropped an 8-1 decision to Aplington-Parkersburg’s Blake Pruisner, but he came back to edge West Des Moines Valley’s Mason Barr by a 10-9 decision.

That put Harrelson in the seventh-place match, where he fell to Webster City’s Alex Oswald by an 8-2 decision.

Evan Rix (113), Erik Tanner (126) and Traye Pelzer (145) all went 1-2 on the day for Nevada. Rix defeated Dowling Catholic’s Nate Sheehy by an 8-2 decision in the consolation round, Tanner pinned Waverly-Shell Rock’s Isaiah Kahler in the opening round and Pelzer scored a 13-5 major decision in the opening round over Aplington-Parkersburg’s Steffen Seys.

Mark Trullinger ended up 1-3 at 285 for Nevada. Trullinger’s victory was a 4-2 decision over Carroll’s Zack Beyerink in the opening round.

Waverly-Shell Rock – the No. 1 team in Class 3A – won the team championship with 209 points. Cedar Rapids Prairie took second with 184.5 points and Clarion-Goldfield came in third with a score of 142.

GILBERT – Nevada ended up 0-3 in a quadrangular meet with Gilbert, Boone and West Marshall Jan. 7 at Gilbert.

The Cubs’ suffered a 58-21 loss against Gilbert. They were slightly more competitive against Boone in falling by a 54-24 margin and West Marshall overwhelmed Nevada by a 68-6 score as the Cubs’ dual record dropped to 3-10 on the season.

In the loss to Gilbert the Cubs picked up two pins and one victory by decision.

Evan Rix stuck the Tigers’ Stephen Shuka in three minutes, one second at 113 pounds and Kody Harrelson pinned Jaden Hasstedt in 4:49 at 160. Erik Tanner picked up the victory by decision at 126 as he toppled Gilbert’s Matthew Shuka by a 7-6 score and Traye Pelzer received a forfeit at 145 for Nevada.

In the loss to Boone, Nevada ended up with two pins. Rix took care of Boone’s Cade Burma in 2:34 and Tanner downed the Toreadors’ Troy Borsh in 1:33.

Wayne Beard (106) and Cody Weier (152) received forfeits for Nevada against Boone.

Nevada didn’t have anything go its way versus West Marshall. The only points the Cubs received against the Trojans came via a forfeit win by Pelzer.
