Cubs lose close HOIC games with Gilbert, R-S

WOODWARD – The Nevada softball team had a rough go at the Madrid Invitational Saturday as the shorthanded Cubs suffered a pair of 14-3 losses to Woodward-Granger and Madrid.

In the loss to Woodward-Granger Nevada hung tough for three innings. The game was scoreless for two innings and then Woodward-Granger put up six runs in the third, but Nevada plated three runs in the inning to stay within striking distance.

Woodward-Granger took charge over the next two innings. The Hawks scored four runs in each frame and kept Nevada off the scoreboard, ending the game early on account of the 10-run rule.

Nevada finished with four hits in the loss. Ellie Burlage went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Abby Van Dam singled and scored and Madi Highland singled and drove in two runs. Tanner Messerli and Peyton Messerli both walked and scored once for the Cubs.

Alex Van Dam took the loss on the mound. She went all five innings and gave up 14 earned runs on 16 hits with one strikeout and walk apiece.

A brutal first inning was too much for Nevada to overcome in the loss to Madrid. The Cubs gave up 11 runs in the opening inning and never recovered.

All three Cub runs in the game came in the third inning. Nevada totaled five hits against the Tigers.

Maddi Highland doubled and Kelsey Haley, Peyton Messerli, Ellie Burlage and Erica Helton each singled once. Highland drove in one run, Haley scored once, Messerli stole a base and drove in a run and Burlage tallied one walk, steal, run and RBI apiece.

Tanner Messerli also scored a run for Nevada.

Madison Abraham was the losing pitcher as she allowed 10 earned runs on five hits with five walks and one strikeout. Alex Van Dam threw 2 2/3 innings and gave up three earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

Nevada played both games without several key contributors who were participating in the 1A girls’ soccer state championship game. The two losses put Nevada at 2-10 on the season.

NEVADA – The inability to string hits together doomed Nevada in a 2-0 Heart of Iowa Conference loss to Gilbert Friday in Nevada.

Cub pitcher Alex Van Dam threw a strong complete game, but she was hurt by one mistake in the sixth inning when Gilbert’s Elise Powers belted a two-run home run for the game’s only runs. Nevada’s lack of punch at the plate prevented it from countering over the final two innings as the Cubs fell to 1-8 in the HOIC.

Nevada only totaled four hits all game. Kelsey Haley, Skye Borton, Ellie Burlage and Holly Coogler each had one single.

Haley also stole a base and Tanner Messerli drew a walk for the Cubs.

Van Dam took the loss despite limiting Gilbert to just four hits. She struck out three and walked two, going the full seven innings.

Clare Isenhart struck out five and walked one in seven innings to earn the win for Gilbert. Courtesy runner Andrea Daley scored one run and Powers finished 2-for-3 offensively for the Tigers.

ROLAND – Nevada couldn’t match Roland-Story’s consistency on offense in a 5-3 loss to the Norse June 11 in Roland.

The Cubs pounded out seven hits, but all of them were singles. Roland-Story picked up 10 hits, including two extra-base knocks, and that slight edge on offense proved to be the difference.

Nevada jumped out to 1-0 lead after one inning. Roland-Story tied the game in the third inning and then went up 3-1 with two runs in the fourth. The Cubs tied the game in the top of the sixth, but the Norse came right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning and Nevada couldn’t answer in the seventh.

Ellie Burlage went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Erin Francis finished 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI, Skye Borton was 1-for-4 with a run and a walk and Erica Helton ended up 1-for-3 with a steal and an RBI for Nevada. Abby Van Dam also singled and walked twice, Peyton Messerli picked up a single, Tanner Messerli walked once and Kelsey Haley scored a run for the Cubs.

Alex Van Dam was the losing pitcher. She allowed just three earned runs with one strikeout and no walks in six innings.

Sydney Berends went 4-for-4 with a double, triple and RBI and Cassie Shadlow finished 2-for-4 with two runs for Roland-Story. Sydney Mathis struck out three with one walk and one hit allowed in 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win for the Norse.
