Cubs lose close one to Grinnell at home

NEVADA – The Nevada baseball team did well pitching and in the field, but the Cubs sputtered at the plate in a 4-0 loss to Grinnell July 9 at Billy Sunday Field.

The Cubs kept Grinnell to one run over six innings. But they were unable to put anything on the board and Grinnell pulled away with a three-run seventh to drop Nevada to 6-17 on the season.

Tyler Shafer gave up three earned runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts and walks apiece, going all seven innings to take the loss for Nevada. Brett Gable gave up four walks and two hits and he struck out three in five innings to earn the victory for Grinnell.

Eli Dunne went 2-for-4 with a double, run, steal and three RBI to pace the Tigers on offense.

NEVADA – It was a forgetful evening for Nevada against Saydel July 8 at Billy Sunday Field.

The Cubs gave up at least seven runs in two separate innings in a 20-2 loss to the Eagles.

The game got away from Nevada right off the bat. The Cubs gave up 10 runs in the first inning.

Nevada put up two runs in its half of the first, but the Cub bats went silent the rest of the way to allow Saydel to cruise to victory in five innings due to the 10-run rule. With the loss, Nevada dropped to 5-12 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

Traye Pelzer went 2-for-3 with a double and a run and Chris Dobernecker hit a two-run home run for Nevada on offense. Brandon DeGroot and Bennett Thompson each walked once as the only other Cubs to reach base.

DeGroot was the losing pitcher. He gave up 10 earned runs on 14 hits with four walks and three strikeouts in five innings.

Joe Seuferer went 4-for-4 with a double, steal and three runs and RBI apiece to pace Saydel on offense. Devin Porter homered, walked, scored three times and drove in two runs and Dylan Coffin was 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs and RBI apiece for the Eagles.

Michael Miller picked up the win for Saydel. He threw all five innings and gave up two earned runs with five strikeouts and two walks.

GILBERT – Nevada was hurt by a slow start and a bad fourth inning in an 11-2 loss at Gilbert July 7.

The Cubs fell behind 4-0 over the first three innings. They came up with a run in the fourth, but Gilbert countered with a six-run outburst in the bottom of the inning to put the game away.

Nevada tallied seven hits in the loss.

Traye Pelzer was 2-for-4 with a run, Brandon DeGroot went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Alex Good doubled, walked, scored and drove in a run for the Cubs.

Patrick Stephenson and Macade Matuska each added one hit apiece and Matuska also drew a walk.

Colton Tibedeau took the loss for Nevada. He gave up four earned runs on five hits with two walks and one strikeout in three innings.

Pelzer threw the other three innings. He allowed seven runs – four earned – on five hits with one strikeout and no walks in three innings.

Jacob Adams went 3-for-4 with a double, run and two RBI and Barrett Schonefeld was 3-for-3 with one run and two RBI to pace Gilbert offensively. Evan Johnson gave up two runs with 13 strikeouts and two walks in six innings to earn the win for the Tigers.
