Cubs lose tough home battle with R-S

NEVADA – A good finish wasn’t enough for the Nevada boys’ basketball team in a 53-47 loss to Roland-Story Saturday at the Nevada High School Field House.

Nevada sputtered on offense over the first two quarters, trailing 24-13 at the half.

In the third quarter Nevada was able to match their entire scoring output of the first half, but the Cubs still trailed 36-26 heading into the final period. Things started clicking for Nevada over the final eight minutes as the Cubs put up 21 points, but they couldn’t slow down Roland-Story enough to make up the entire deficit.

Nevada only shot 31 percent from the field, compared to Roland-Story’s 48-percent effort. The Cubs hung tough by making six 3-pointers to Roland-Story’s one and shooting better from the line as they were 15 of 22 and the Norsemen went 12 of 20 from the charity stripe.

Cole Gidel hit 5 of 11 3-pointers and ended up with 16 points as the lone Cub to score in double figures. Freshman A.J. Strottman added eight points and five rebounds, Zach Hansen netted seven points and Alex Merfeld delivered six points, six rebounds and three blocks for the Cubs, who fell to 4-13 overall and 4-12 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

Zach Hovick did most of the damage for Roland-Story as he scored 24 points and tacked on six rebounds and three assists. Adam Shorkey added 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and two blocks and Ben Clark dished out six assists and tacked on four points and three steals.
