The eighth-grade football team started off play this year with a 38-18 loss at Bondurant on Sept. 12. The Cubs played well overall, but were doomed by mistakes, including five turnovers. They rallied to within a touchdown late in the fourth quarter, but let the game get away in the last five minutes. Nevada’s rushing game was led by James Coltrain’s 114 yards and Luke Fevold’s 85 yards.
In the B game, the Cubs handled the Bluejays, 40-0. Jack West, Trent Stahl, Rodrigo Perez, Logan Hill, Jack Steele and Dan Kellen each scored a touchdown. West and Om’Unique Wilkerson each threw for a touchdown as well. Stahl led the way with 70 yards rushing.
On Sept. 26, Nevada crushed Roland-Story by a score of 54-8. Nevada’s defense played exceptionally well as the Norse’s only touchdown came on a fumble recovery. The Cubs’ ground game was led by Brendan Sellberg’s 119 yards and two TD’s, Fevold’s 83 yards and one TD and Preston Cattanach’s 55 yards and two TD’s. Cam Shill also had success passing. His 77 yards in the air included touchdown passes to Cattanach and Jack Higgins.
The B game was also a success as the Cubs won 26-0. The rushing attack was led by Stahl’s 65 yards and one TD, West’s 48 yards and one TD and Tanner Lyon’s 24 yards. Wilkerson also threw for 55 yards and one TD. Carter Bremer had a 40-yard reception and Stahl had a 15-yard TD reception.
The Sept. 19 game versus North Polk was postponed and will be made up on Monday, Oct. 21.
