STORY CITY – Nevada senior Evan Rix picked the right time to get the first tournament victory of his career.

The Cubs competed at the Class 2A sectional meet in Story City Saturday and Rix was crowned champion at 113 pounds to advance to districts this Saturday in Webster City.

“It’s amazing,” Rix said. “My hard work has paid off and I feel great.”

Rix was the top seeded 113-pounder at Story City and he wrestled like it on Saturday.

After receiving a bye in the quarterfinals, Rix pinned Humboldt’s Austin Meier in two minutes, 39 seconds to reach the finals. In the championship match Rix went up against Ballard’s Bailey Heinen and he had little trouble.

Rix got on Heinen early and never let up, earning a major decision victory by a 13-2 score.

“I’ve really been working on top,” Rix said. “I was really able to control him with hard work.”

Rix will take a 36-13 record into districts next week.

“It’s my senior year,” Rix said. “I want to go to state. I’m really excited and my coaches have helped me all the way.”

Rix was the only Cub grappler to advance to districts. Peyton Sharp took fourth at 138, Kody Harrelson was fourth at 160, Wayne Beard and Erik Tanner came in fifth at 106 and 126 respectively and Calvin Schneider (132), Cody Weier (152) and Trice Logsdon (182) each placed sixth.

“The team wrestled to the best of their abilities,” Nevada head coach Hesston Johnson said. “This was an exceptionally tough sectional tournament, but we battled and I am proud of the boys on the team.”

Beard, Tanner and Sharp each picked up one victory during the tournament.

Beard pinned Webster City’s Derick Khaleck in 3:03 and Tanner stuck Gilbert’s Jake Larimore in 28 seconds during the consolation round. Sharp earned a fall over Roland-Story’s Bill Joslin in 1:47 during the quarterfinals.

This Saturday’s 2A district meet in Webster City will take place at noon.

Final team scores: 1. Webster City 232 points, 2. Humboldt 219, 3. Ballard 207, 4. Gilbert 159, 5. Roland-Story 130, 6. Nevada 71.
