Cubs suffer 8-0 HOIC loss
STORY CITY – A rusty Nevada baseball team never got on track against Roland-Story July 3 in Story City as the Cubs were handed an 8-0 loss by the Norsemen.
Nevada hadn’t played in over a week due to rain cancellations a flooded home field. It showed against a Norsemen team ranked fifth in Class 2A as the Cubs never found an answer to Roland-Story pitcher Zach Hovick.
Hovick struck out 12 Nevada batters and only allowed five hits and one walk. Cub pitchers Tyler Shafer and Traye Pelzer – in contrast – only struck out four batters and walked seven.
Roland-Story only had six hits, but the walks and Cub defensive mistakes enabled the Norsemen to win in a rout. Roland-Story led 3-0 after one inning and the Norsemen added one run in the third, fourth and sixth frames and two in the seventh.
Shafer took the loss as he gave up six runs – two earned – on four hits with seven walks and three strikeouts in six innings. Pelzer allowed two unearned runs on two hits with no walks and one strikeout in one inning.
Pelzer also went 2-for-3 at the plate and Chris Dobernecker was 2-for-3 with a double. Alex Good was 1-for-3 with a steal and Brandon DeGroot picked up the lone Cub walk.
Ben Clark went 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs and an RBI and Alex Muhlenburg and Tyler Hovick each drove in two runs for Roland-Story on offense.
The loss put Nevada at 6-14 overall and 5-10 in the Heart of Iowa Conference. Roland-Story improved to 20-9 and 10-5 respectively.
