No. 5 Cubs eradicate Mustangs

NEVADA – Nevada opened Class 3A regional play, looking every bit like the No. 5 team in 3A after destroying East Marshall in three straight sets Monday at the Nevada High School Field House.

Nevada (30-11) wasn’t challenged in a single set, in sweeping East Marshall (6-19) for its ninth-consecutive victory. The Cubs cruised to 25-11, 25-8 and 25-10 wins, advancing to the 3A semifinals, where they will face South Tama tonight in Nevada.

The Cub offensive attack produced 33 kills against only four errors in 72 attacks for an impressive kill-efficiency rate of .403. Nevada also dominated the net defensively with 13 blocks, including five solo blocks.

Serving was another strong point for Nevada against East Marshall. The Cubs went 68 of 37 with 10 aces.

Middle blocker Kati Cassabaum had 11 kills in 17 attacks and she also turned in an impressive seven blocks for Nevada. Outside hitter Megan Pringnitz turned in an outstanding all-around match as she went 23 of 26 serving with six aces and compiled 13 digs and nine kills.

Freshman outside hitter Abby Stephenson also had nine kills and she finished with no errors in 17 attacks. Stephenson added three digs, two blocks and one assist.

Emma Lodestein added with two kills and Mara Rhodes had three blocks, two assists and one kill for the Cubs. Michaela Matuska came through big at setter by handing out 22 assists, going 22 of 22 serving with two aces and contributing four digs, one block and one kill.

Jessica Helton and Erin Francis came through with nine digs apiece and they combined to go 13 of 13 serving with two aces.

Nevada’s match with South Tama (18-12) will take place at 7 p.m. tonight at the Nevada High School Field House.
