LAMONI – A forgettable first half did in the Colo-Nesco football team in its 8-man District 6 football game with Lamoni Friday in Lamoni.
Coming off back-to-back victories, the Royals entered the game on a nice roll as they looked to get back in the 8-man playoff race. But Colo-Nesco was simply overpowered by the Demons from the start, giving up 32 unanswered points in the first quarter and never fully recovering in a 68-12 loss.
Lamoni scored four touchdowns in the opening quarter and converted the following 2-point conversion each time to build a commanding early lead. The Demons added two more touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 46-0 lead and put the game away by halftime.
Colton Ranney, Daniel Ansong, Beau Bjorland all had a touchdown run in the first quarter and Jacob Williams added a scoring run in the second quarter for Lamoni. Caleb Heltenberg was responsible for the other two Demon touchdowns in the first half as he returned an interception 13 yards for a score in the first quarter and caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Bjorland in the second quarter.
Lamoni went up 54-0 early in the second half as Ansong found the end zone from 11 yards out and Bjorland added a successful 2-point run.
Colo-Nesco stepped up to play Lamoni evenly the rest of the way. Blake Stevens had a 4-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to prevent a shutout for Colo-Nesco and he added a 25-yard run into the end zone in the fourth period.
For the game Colo-Nesco was outgained in total yards, 350-149. The Royals did almost all their damage on the ground (143 yards) and they had one turnover.
The Demons ran for 291 yards and they went the entire game without a turnover, improving to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the district.
Colo-Nesco fell to 2-4 on the season and 2-2 in district play.
Stevens ran for 65 yards on eight carries, Taylor Hill picked up 60 yards rushing on 16 attempts and he also completed 2 of 6 passes for six yards with one interception for the Royals. Grant Tiarks ran for 22 yards, Garret Tiarks ran for 10 yards and caught one pass for two yards and Clayton Bryan had one reception for four yards.
Stevens and Dacian Williams both made five tackles for the Royals defensively. Grant Tiarks, Bryan and Michael Starling ended up with three stops apiece.
Ansong ran for 127 yards on just eight carries as the top offensive threat for Lamoni. Bjorland combined for 91 yards passing and rushing, Darin Martin rushed for 55 yards and two touchdowns, Ranney picked up 38 yards on the ground, Heltenberg made two catches for 20 yards and Drew Radloff added two receptions for 35 yards.
Next up for Colo-Nesco is a home game with Mormon Trail (1-4, 0-3). The game will start at 7 p.m. this Friday in Colo.
