Royals fall to Tigers in district quarterfinals

TRAER - A rough start doomed the Colo-Nesco baseball team in a 9-3 Class 1A district quarterfinal loss to Iowa Valley July 15 at Traer.

The Royals spotted the Tigers a 3-0 lead after one inning. They came back with two runs in the top of the second, but Iowa Valley added another three-run surge in the bottom of the inning.

Colo-Nesco settled down in the third inning, but Iowa Valley plated two more runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to build an insurmountable lead. The Royals only scored one run over the final five innings as they ended the season with a 6-20 record.

Payton Larson, Taylor Hill, Grant Tiarks, Tanner Clatt and Mark Frohwein each had one hit for Colo-Nesco in the loss. Larson doubled, scored and drove in two runs; Clatt singled in a run; Hill and Tiarks both singled and scored and Frohwein finished with a single.

Christian Reischauer gave up all nine runs - just two earned - on six hits with six strikeouts and five walks in 4 ⅔ innings to take the pitching loss. Brady Stoeffler didn’t allow a run on two hits in 1 ⅓ innings of relief.

Austin Carney gave up three runs - two earned - on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks in six innings to earn the win for Iowa Valley. Austin Schlabach threw a scoreless seventh inning with one strikeout for the Tigers.

Carney was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and four RBI to lead Iowa Valley at the plate. Bennett Goettsch singled and drove in two runs, Josh Jordan was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Dylan Healey went 2-for-4 with two runs for the Tigers.
