C-N picks up first victory
COLO – The first victory of the season came in dominating fashion for the Colo-Nesco football team Friday as the Royals used two huge quarters to hand Ankeny Christian Academy a 60-6 drubbing in Colo.
Colo-Nesco (1-3) put up 24 points in the second quarter and 22 in the third to turn the game into a rout. The Royals had four touchdowns of 35 yards or more and they held ACA to 161 total yards.
“I am really proud of our team and their accomplishments this week,” Colo-Nesco head coach Josh Nessa said. “We played and executed much better. We made some changes in scheme, personnel and formation on both sides of the ball and overcame adversity. Our young men responded well and finally got a win.”
Taylor Hill had a 38-yard touchdown run for Colo-Nesco’s first score in the opening quarter and he added a 50-yard scoring jaunt in the second period. Grant Tiarks tacked on a 37-yard touchdown run and Alex Griffin found the end zone on a run from 17 yards out in the second quarter to give Colo-Nesco a 30-0 lead.
ACA closed within 30-6 at the half as Daniel Strong caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Noah Szymanski with 10 seconds left in the second quarter. But that did nothing to slow down Colo-Nesco’s momentum.
In the third quarter Colo-Nesco finished off three scoring drives with short touchdown runs and the Royals also picked up a pair of two-point conversions to build a 52-6 lead. Griffin had a 2-yard touchdown run, Brady Stoeffler found the end zone from five yards out and Clayton Bryan punched one across the goal line on a 1-yard run.
Freshman Garret Tiarks capped the scoring with the longest play of the game – a 77-yard touchdown scamper with just under five minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Hill finished with 174 yards rushing on 21 carries and he completed 2 of 5 passes for 23 yards. Garret and Grant both picked up all of their yards rushing on their touchdown runs and Grant also caught one pass for 23 yards.
Griffin ran for 47 yards on 15 carries, Tanner Clatt caught one pass for 17 yards and Stoeffler was 1of 1 passing for 17 yards. As a team Colo-Nesco totaled 386 yards of total offense.
On defense the Royals held ACA to just 56 yards rushing and they forced four Eagle turnovers.
Dacian Wilson had eight tackles, Blake Stevens made seven stops and Garret and Grant tallied six and five respectively. Griffin finished with four tackles and a fumble recovery, Evan Webb recovered a fumble and Noah Gibbons intercepted a pass for the Royals.
Colo-Nesco will resume 8-man District 6 play this Friday against East Union (1-3, 0-1). The game will take place at Colo and it is set to start at 7 p.m.
