Royals split close games with North Tama, Dunkerton

TRAER – The Colo-Nesco baseball team wasn’t able to string out enough hits to get past North Tama July 3 in Traer as the Royals lost a hard-fought 3-2 battle.

Colo-Nesco jumped out to a 1-0 lead after one inning, but North Tama tied the score in the third and went ahead with a run in the fourth. The Royals came back with a run in the top of the fifth to tie the score, but the Redhawks went right back in front with a run in the bottom of the fifth and they shut down Colo-Nesco over the final two frames.

Brady Stoeffler took the loss for the Royals. He threw all six innings and allowed two earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and walks apiece.

Colo-Nesco didn’t give Stoeffler much support, finishing with just four hits.

Stoeffler tried to help his own cause by going 1-for-3 with a steal and a run, Taylor Hill went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Matthew Hill and Christian Montgomery also picked up one hit a piece.

Mark Frohwein walked and scored and Steven Cutler added a steal for Colo-Nesco. The loss put the Royals at 6-16 overall and 5-9 in the Iowa Star Conference.

ZEARING – Colo-Nesco withstood a Dunkerton comeback attempt to edge the Raiders by a 3-2 score in nine innings July 2 in Zearing.

The Royals took a 2-0 lead after five innings by plating one run in both the fourth and fifth frames. But Dunkerton responded with a run in the sixth and the Raiders added another in the top of the seventh.

After Colo-Nesco failed to score in the bottom of the seventh, the game went into extra innings. Neither team scored in the eighth and Royal pitcher Christian Reischauer kept Dunkerton off the board in the top of the ninth.

That opened the door for Colo-Nesco in the bottom of the ninth and the Royals took advantage by manufacturing the winning run to pick up their third Iowa Star Conference win of the week. Colo-Nesco also received two forfeit wins over Meskwaki on July 1.

Reischauer didn’t allow an earned run on six hits, going the full nine innings to get the victory over Dunkerton. He worked around eight walks with the help of nine strikeouts.

Reischauer also led the Royals offensively by going 3-for-5 with two steals and runs apiece. Wayne Beard scored the other Colo-Nesco run.

Brady Stoeffler was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI; Garrett Tiarks went 1-for-3 with a double, walk and RBI and Grant Tiarks also walked and drove in a run for the Royals. Taylor Hill walked four times and stole a base and Steven Cutler went 1-for-2 for Colo-Nesco.

Lane Johnson picked up the loss for Dunkerton in relief as he allowed one run on one hit with seven walks and three strikeouts in two innings. Jordan Kubitz gave up two runs – one earned – on three hits with seven strikeouts and three walks in six innings for the Raiders.
