Strong finish lets Royals roll past Trojans

STATE CENTER – It took a little while to get going, but there was no stopping the Colo-Nesco girls’ basketball team once its engine was fully revved up against West Marshall in its season opener Nov. 22 at State Center.

Colo-Nesco, ranked third in Class 1A to start the season, used a dominant second half to trounce their top non-conference rivals by a 56-36 score.

The Royals actually trailed at the half, but a solid third quarter gave them a five-point lead; then they blew the game open in the final period.

Colo-Nesco force a plethora of turnovers – finishing with 25 steals as a team – and outrebounded West Marshall by a 48-36 margin. That helped the Royals get off a whopping 24 more shots from the field and post a 13-2 advantage in free-throw attempts.

Center Caitlyn Riese and diminutive guard Shayla Dean provided an excellent inside-outside punch to lead Colo-Nesco.

Riese posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds and she also had two steals and one block. Dean ended up with 14 points shooting 6 of 14 from the field and 2 of 4 from 3-point range and she also swiped an impressive nine steals and dished out five assists.

Madison Farren totaled seven points, 12 rebounds and four steals, Leah Vincent came off the bench to score seven points and Melanie Van Loon finished with six points and three steals for the Royals. Hannah Buseman put up five rebounds, five assists and four steals and Makaelyn Neuendorf delivered nine rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Colo-Nesco held West Marshall’s Rachel Freland to seven points on just 3 of 21 shooting from the field. Freland also had four assists, three steals and three rebounds.

Madisen Streeter led West Marshall with 10 points and 11 rebounds and Addie Wilkinson added six points, 10 rebounds, four steals and two blocks for the Trojans.
