Three wrestlers place for Nevada at Tiger Invite

ADEL – The Nevada wrestling team had three wrestlers place at the Tiger Invitational Saturday in Adel.

The Cubs’ Evan Rix, Kody Harrelson and Mark Trullinger all earned a place on the medal stand at the conclusion of the tournament. Rix placed fourth at 113 pounds, Harrelson took sixth at 160 and Trullinger came in seventh at 285.

As a team Nevada was 15th out of 17 teams with 37 points. Webster City won the team championship with 215 points and Dallas Center-Grimes took second with a score of 179.5.

Rix finished 3-2 at 113. He earned one pin, one victory by major decision and one via decision.

In his first match Rix pinned Adel-Desoto-Minburn’s Kyle Wilkerson in five minutes, 12 seconds. He followed up by edging talented Red Oak wrestler Dakota Petty by a 12-9 decision.

In the semifinals Rix suffered a close 8-4 loss to Prairie City-Monroe’s Xavier Miller. Rix bounced back to whip Antioch’s Jake Gross by a 13-0 major decision to reach the third-place match.

In the third-place match, Rix lost a competitive 2-1 battle with Audubon’s Kyle Juelsgaard. The loss put Rix at 19-10 on the season.

Harrelson went 2-3 at 160.

In his opening match Harrelson pinned North Polk’s Graham Hoshaw in 1:44. Harrelson was pinned by Antioch’s Kenneth Strohman in the quarterfinals, but he came back to edge PCM’s Jade Coleman by a 7-6 decision.

In the consolation third round Harrelson was dealt a 16-3 major decision setback by DCG’s Logan Buck. Harrelson concluded the tournament with a loss by fall to Des Moines East’s Prince York.

Trullinger completed the tournament with a 3-1 record at 285. He earned one fall and a pair of victories by decision.

In the first round Trullinger was handed a 6-0 loss by Jezidiah Phippen of Atlantic. After receiving a bye in the opening consolation round, Trullinger scored a 5-4 decision over Bryce Shutt of DCG.

Trullinger followed that victory over Shutt by pinning Red Oak’s Keaton Kephart in 1:56. That set up a rematch with Phippen in the seventh-place match, and this time Trullinger prevailed by a 4-1 decision.

Wayne Beard (106) and Traye Pelzer (145) each picked up one victory in the tournament for Nevada. Beard pinned Ames’ Lucas Holloway in the consolation round and Pelzer pulled off a 5-3 opening round victory over North Polk’s Chandler Smith.
